Since its FDA approval, laser hair removal’s popularity has risen drastically—becoming the world’s fourth most common non-invasive procedure.

The average woman spends 72 days of her life shaving. With today’s laser hair removal technology. Hair-free skin is achievable in just a few months, which means you’ll never have to shave again! Not only does this elevate any stress of planning your wax or shaving before a beach day, but it completely eliminates razor bumps, ingrowns, etc. Before your first laser hair removal session at Enlighten Laser and Skin Care Clinics, follow these three simple steps to ensure the safest and most efficient journey to forever-smooth skin.

1) Steer clear of the sun

You may already know that your skin becomes more sensitive to the sun post any laser treatment; but what you may not realize is sun exposure before a treatment can be just as harmful. Having a tan when you walk into your appointment can increase the risk of burning. Whether your tan is naturally obtained from the sun or artificially through tanning products. It is best to wait until it fades to begin your laser hair removal process. For at least two weeks before your treatment be mindful of your sun exposure and apply a sunscreen of SPF of 30 or higher when exposure is unavoidable.

2) No plucking or waxing—only shaving

In the weeks leading up to your appointment, avoid plucking or waxing the area you want to be treated. Both these methods remove the hair from the root which makes it impossible for the laser to target and destroy the hair follicle (because it’s already gone). Shaving is required prior to your appointments as any hair above the skin will burn from the laser and this is the only hair removal method that leaves the follicle intact. Because each pore has upwards of five follicles and follicles can only be destroyed during the growth phase. Multiple treatments are required to be completely hair free. After each treatment you’ll see less and less hair but continue shaving prior to appointments until instructed otherwise.

3) Lay off the caffeine

Whether you prefer coffee, pop or energy drinks, all types caffeinated drinks should be avoided for at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment. Since caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system, it can heighten any nervousness you may feel and even make you tense or agitated. When walking into your appointment, you want to be as relaxed as possible. Getting a good night’s rest and skipping caffeine for a day will ensure you are calm, cool and collected for your session.
