Are you trying to combat the signs of aging? Read about the benefits of Botox and dermal fillers in Alberta!

We often get asked about dermal fillers and Botox. The main reason…to correct some signs of aging or skin imperfections on the surface.

Some of our clients want to get rid of scars on their skin, while others want to plump up their cheeks or lips. But, one of the most popular reasons for individuals is to look younger and reduce the signs of aging on their face. As such, we wanted to discuss Botox and dermal fillers in more detail.

But first…

What is Botox?

Botox injections block signals from the nerves to the muscles by using a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA.

OnobotulinumtoxinA is a purified form of botulinum toxin. By freezing the nerves that cause muscles to contract, the muscles become more relaxed and will stop frequent movement on the face that can lead to wrinkles and fine lines, or signs of aging.

To Note:

Botox injections are currently offered at our Airdrie, Alberta location. Each injection itself can vary in length depending on if an initial consultation is required (every new client will be required to have one) and the number of units needed. No anesthetic is required for Botox injections as the fine needle only causes minor discomfort. Full, optimal results will be visible approximately seven to 14 days post-injection, and the effects of Botox injections typically last three to six months fading over time. However, many believe Botox to also be gradual as the muscles slowly shrink causing wrinkles and lines to be less severe.

What can Botox Do For My Skin?

Botox is perfect for wrinkles and fine lines that occur from smiling or frowning. This includes forehead wrinkles, wrinkles between the eyes and those that occur around the mouth and eyes (crow’s feet). Many are surprised to discover Botox injections can help reduce the pain of severe headaches and migraines. Although they will still occur, the release of acetylcholine is blocked thus preventing the contraction of a muscle that could otherwise be more sensitive to pain.

What are Dermal Fillers?

While Botox injections freeze the muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines, fillers provide volume and can give the face a more plump and youthful appearance. Similar to Botox injections, the length of filler appointments vary depending on what each individual is trying to treat. Typically, those that have had dermal fillers previously will have few questions, which sometimes take up a considerable amount of time at an appointment. Not every filler is right for every facial concern, so always describe your areas of concern to the injection doctor prior to the procedure.

Dermal fillers “fill” space where wrinkles and fine lines appear. These fillers commonly use ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and are placed in the middle layer of the skin. When these agents are placed in the skin as such, it reduces most signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. These ingredients also help produce collagen, which is what causes our skin to appear more youthful.

What can Dermal Fillers do for My Skin?

Facial fillers can help address the following concerns: thin lips, hallows, wrinkles, recessed scars, shadowed lower lids, sagging skin.

Results of dermal fillers are much longer than those with Botox injections. Although dependent on the type of filler, results can last anywhere from six months to 24 months. Results from permanent filler can last up to five years.
