As Canada’s Skin Care Experts, the team of Enlighten Laser Canada are well versed in chemical peels.

Chemical peels are a popular non-surgical, non-invasive way to rejuvenate the skin.

How do chemical peels work?

A chemical peel treatment uses chemical reaction between a solution and the skin to safely remove the outer, most damaged layer of skin revealing the more radiant skin underneath.

Chemical peels vary in their strength and ingredients—Glycolic (AHA) peel, Trichloracetic (TCA) acid peel and deep, Phenol peels are suitable for different skin concerns.

Once the chemical solution is applied to the skin, the skin will blister, and it will eventually peel off. A chemical peel procedure can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes, and the downtime differs depending on the type of chemical peel. There are three different types of chemical peels, you can choose between light, medium and deep. These levels indicate the level of skin rejuvenation, noting that the light chemical peel might not give the same results as a deep chemical peel if you’re looking for long term results.

When the chemical peel agent is applied to the skin it exfoliates thickened surface skin to boost collagen production to firm the skin’s surface. Once the chemical peel is removed from the skin (‘blistered’), the healthier layer of skin is revealed. Chemical peels remove visible red blood cells, reduce the size of enlarged pores, reduce the visibility of scars, and tighten the skin. The effects of the chemical peel ultimately remove any signs of aging and rejuvenate the top layer of the skin, simulating the look of a facelift.

What do chemical peels treat?

Chemical peels treat the following skin concerns:

-sun damage or age spots

-wrinkles and fine lines

-uneven skin

-unwanted scars and acne scars

Results found with chemical peels are truly outstanding. Once your skin has recovered from the chemical peel and with frequency your skin will remain vibrant and youthful looking overtime.

What can I expect after my chemical peel?

Depending on what level of chemical peel was chosen for you by our team of skin care experts, you may experience a different recovery process. Light peels are very superficial and require no downtime. Clients are welcome to go back to their normal routine immediately post-treatment. For medium to deep peels, some downtime will be required and a aftercare program including ointment use will be provided.

That being said, after any chemical peel do expect some redness and avoid direct sun exposure. We also recommend using mineral makeup for the days (or weeks) following the procedure.

Are there any risks associated with chemical peels?

When sticking to light chemical peels you will be less likely to notice any side effects. Medium and deep peels have greater risk associated as the results are that much more significant.

Possible side effects include:

-prolonged redness of the skin

-swelling or inflammation

-potential of skin discolouration or sensitivity.
